🚩For Blackboard Original courses, see the following:
Grade center set-up🏴This information applies only to Blackboard Learn Ultra.
Gradebook Overview
Grades in base navigation are organized by course. You can easily view items to grade and view all work for each of your courses, all in one place. Your Gradebook is populated by enrolled students and content items added to your course. You can grade coursework, manage items, and post grades from multiple views.
Gradebook Views
You can view you course Gradebook in list or grid view. The Grid view presents the traditional rows and columns. You can search, filter, upload, and download the gradebook.
Two additional views are now available, Gradable Items and Student tabs.
Gradable Items
The Gradable Items list is the default view. You can view all the coursework you've assigned and your grading progress. View how many submissions need grading and grades you need to post. You can sort by Item, Due Date, Grading Status, and Post columns.
Why wait to“Post grades”? Many instructors prefer to grade all submissions before posting grades to students so one students feedback does not become another students advantage.
Open items: Select an item's title to open a new layer. See whose submissions need grading and who hasn't received their grades yet. Use the Filter menu to display only those submissions that need grading.
Check progress: See how many submissions you need to grade and grades you have to post. Complete indicates you have no outstanding grading tasks for that item. All graded appears when all submitted attempts are graded and posted, but some students haven't submitted work yet and don't have grades.
Manage grades: Open an item's menu to access the management functions, such as Edit and Delete. Question Analysis is also available from Analytics.
Add a row or column: Select the plus sign wherever you want to add a row:
- Add Item: Add a row for coursework, such as a participation grade.
- Add Calculation: Add a row for a calculation, such as an average assignments grade.
- Add Attendance: Add a row for attendance. After you add attendance, the add option won't appear in the menu again.
Rearrange items: In list view, you can hover to reveal the Move icon and drag and drop the item to a new location.
Students
You can switch to the Students tab to view an overall picture of each student’s engagement. View a list of students and sort columns by Full Name, Student ID, Username, Last Access, and Overall Grade.
Student Grades. You can Search for a student, limit your search to a few letters or the first or last name for the best results. Select a student to view individual items by Item Name, Due Date, Status, Grade, and Feedback.
Student Progress: You can track the progress of a student, through the Status of assignments.
Student Activity: You can compare individual student activity by time spent and grades as compared to the rest of the class. View and download in graph and tabular view. You can also access these views from Analytics, Course Activity.
Submissions
You can filter by Student Status to display All, No Submission, Draft Saved, or Submitted. or Grading Status. You can filter by Grading Status to display All, Needs Grading, Needs Posting, Completed, or Nothing to Grade.
Select the …ellipses icon at the end of each student row to view or create accommodations for a student or to send messages.
Student Grades
Select student names to view their submissions on their individual Student Grades page. In the Status column, you can see completed work, items that need grading, and grades you need to post. You can also view the grades and feedback you’ve provided, create accommodations and send a message.
Messages
You can send a message to anyone involved with your course from the student list.
Messages sent from the student list view also appear on the Messages page.
Accommodations
You can grant accommodations for individual students to exempt students from assessment due dates or time limits. Click the …ellipsis icon at the right end of a student row to select the Accommodations option. The Accommodations panel will open at the right side of the screen.
Once you have created accommodations for a student, a purple mark will appear in front of the student's name to indicate the student has accommodations.
You can also give an individual student an exception on a specific test or assignment. An exception includes additional attempts or extended access, even if the assessment is hidden from other students. An exception overrides the two settings applied to everyone else for only that specific assessment.
What do students see?
The student's gradebook also has sorting controls to temporarily change the order for each column. This helps students to keep track of their performance and coursework. For example, sorting by due date helps them spot items that are due next.
Gradebook Settings
- Grading Schemas: Map percentages to letter grades or other grade notation for reporting performance (Example: I for incomplete). You can make changes to the default grading schema.
- Please use S for Satisfactory and U for Unsatisfactory. Pass/Fail (P/F) grades are coded as S/U in Colleague/WebAdvisor.
- Grading Categories: Create a gradable item and it automatically appears in the gradebook associated with the appropriate category (Journal, Assignment, Test, Discussion, Exam, Homework, Presentation, Quiz).
- You can add custom categories and use categories for calculated items, such as an assignments average.
- Overall Grade: Choose the format to calculate the overall grade for your course, points, weighted, or advanced.
- Use the formula editor to create custom calculations for the overall grade.
- Student Performance: Receive alerts about student activity and grades in your Activity Stream:
- Number of days a student in inactive (#)
- When a student’s overall grade percentage is below (percent)
- View Course Activity: Send activity stream alerts to students based on these settings.
- Automatic Zeros: Assign automatic zeros for past due work. Students can submit late to update their grades. Students with due date accommodations aren't affected.
- Course Rubrics: Create a Percentage, Percentage Range, Points, Points Range rubric, or use an existing rubric to provide individual feedback to students. You can share rubrics with students before and/or after grading. Feedback will auto-save as you move through the assignment.
