Using the Blackboard Learn App

The Blackboard Learn app is designed for instructors and students to connect with course content and interact on the go.

  • Participate in courses from your mobile device
  • Stay on top of assignments with notifications

Download

  1. Download the app to your mobile device.
  2. If necessary, search for Blackboard.
  3. Install the Blackboard Learn app.
  4. Open the Blackboard Learn app and search for Virginia Wesleyan University.
  5. Log in with the same username and password you use to access Blackboard courses on your computer.

Students

View an up-to-the-minute list of important course activity including new content, announcements, and grades. The Activity Stream automatically prioritizes items to help you focus on the tasks you want to take care of immediately.

The following items show in your Activity Stream:

  • Course announcements
  • Tests and assignments due today or this week
  • Instructor changes to due dates
  • Calendar events for today and the week
  • Instructor changes to events
  • Grades posted for tests, assignments
  • Item added for course items, assignments, tests
  • Missed, overdue, and completed assignments, tests

Courses

Courses will show in the current, completed, or upcoming lists based on the duration or status (open, private, complete). Select the star icon to favorite a course and move it to the top of the list. You can favorite courses in the app or a web browser and they'll display as favorites in both locations.

Your courses may look different than they do in a web browser, but you can easily navigate through your content. Select Courses in the menu to view all of the current and upcoming courses. Tap a course card to see the following items:

Assessments

Tests and assignments are also available in the Blackboard app and include the following functions:

Instructors

  • View and edit assessments
  • View associated rubrics and attachments
  • Preview the student experience
  • Review, provide feedback on submissions
  • Post the grades for students to view

Students

Tests and attached files depend on whether you have the Blackboard Learn Original or Learn Ultra experience. If a test isn't supported on mobile, you'll see a message in the app that directs you to take the assessment in a desktop browser instead.

More

You can edit if you want to receive notifications and customize the type of notifications you receive. Edit Stream, Email, and Push notifications to receive timely reminders on your device for course events.

To access settings, select More from the main menu, then Settings, and scroll down to Notifications.

There’s no need to navigate, just swipe from the notification to start working in the app.

The type of push notifications generated depend on whether you have the Blackboard Learn Original or Learn Ultra experience.

Change the notification display on your device

You can change how your device displays notifications and turn them on or off.

  • iOS: Go to Settings. Select Notifications and locate Blackboard in the list of apps
  • Android: Go to Settings. Locate Apps, select Blackboard, and tap Notifications

The Blackboard Learn app is available in over 30 languages. Language settings affect the app interface, but not the course content. The language of the app comes from your device's operating system, not your Blackboard Learn language preference. The Blackboard Learn app will prompt a restart after the language is changed, any change in the language setting will only reflect after the app is restarted.
